Client Contact. Godfrey & Kahn’s growth can be attributed to its success in providing excellent training and client contact to attorneys early in their careers. We focus on, and are committed to, the growth and development of our associates. At the onset of your career with Godfrey & Kahn, you will immediately become involved and interact with clients. Our lawyers will make a concentrated effort to introduce you to client decision makers. Shareholders are expected to shift client responsibility to you as you refine your skills and gain experience.
Shareholder Track. Like all our associates, you will be hired with the goal and expectation that you will become a shareholder in the firm. At present, an associate generally works with the firm for eight and one-half years before being elected to shareholder status.
Competitive Compensation and Benefits. The salary and benefit package offered to new lawyers is competitive with other major firms. You will find our billable hour expectations to be reasonable, and flexible working arrangements attractive. Training. Our ongoing commitment to associate training and development includes the following:
- Professional Development - Our comprehensive associate training program focuses on practical applications of the law, including business development and client relations skills. Your on-team mentor will train, supervise and assist in these areas. You will also be assigned an off-team mentor to provide you with additional support.
- Library Resources - You will find all the reference materials that you need in our library, which contains a 20,000-volume collection, is staffed by professional law librarians, and provides computers with on-line and CD/ROM access. The library staff will assist you with your research requests.
- Technology - On-line computer research systems and a wide range of Internet resources will be easily accessible from your desk, and you will be able to communicate electronically with clients who have linked to our e-mail system. Our in-house computer training group provides ongoing classes and one-on-one computer and technology assistance.
- Feedback/Reviews - In addition to ongoing informal feedback, you will have a formal annual review. Your views and comments will be actively solicited throughout the review process.

Firm Responsibility. You will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of Godfrey & Kahn’s success, including firm administration. Through various committees—like Recruiting, Marketing, Legal Education, Ethics and Conflicts, Social, Community Involvement and Technology—you will have the opportunity to provide input on firm decision making.
Community Involvement. We encourage our attorneys to become involved in pro bono legal and other community activities. Such volunteer work will be invaluable to your professional and personal growth. The firm provides staff, financial and other support for these efforts.
Opportunities include:

- Service as mediator in alternative dispute resolution,
- Bar activities, and
- Board of directors appointments for charitable and other non-profit organizations.
Flexible Team Approach. Attorneys from various areas of practice work together to solve problems confronting our clients. This approach will allow you to gain experience outside of your specialty area and in specific industries.
