Godfrey & Kahn believes that our law firm, and the communities in which we live and work, must be committed to a professional and cultural environment of inclusion in which men and women having different backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs and cultural and ethnic heritages can thrive. A diverse workforce makes us a better law firm, improving our analysis, our judgment and our ability to understand a wider variety of clients and client issues. As the business community becomes more diverse, and as our clients’ businesses become increasingly global in nature, Godfrey & Kahn’s attorneys not only have the technical sophistication to provide creative business solutions, but we also better understand the motivations and goals of the diverse constituencies that make up the local and global business community.
Diversity enriches Godfrey & Kahn’s atmosphere in many ways. Hence, we strive to foster a firm-wide culture that values and promotes diversity so that all attorneys and staff are included, valued and positioned for success. Godfrey & Kahn recruits, promotes and retains attorneys and staff of diverse backgrounds that reflect the varied backgrounds of the clients and communities we serve. Some of our diversity initiatives are described, below:
Diversity Committee The firm’s Diversity Committee is responsible for developing, monitoring, and evaluating the firm’s strategies and progress in recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce. The firm intentionally limited the size of the Diversity Committee to a small number of key individuals in order to keep it nimble and responsive to recruiting and market factors. Members of this committee also serve on the firm’s Board of Directors, Management, Recruiting and Marketing Committees, guaranteeing that our diversity initiatives are reflected in the actions of the other Committees of the firm and improving the firm-wide implementation of the initiatives. The members of the Committee are:
- Rick Bliss, Managing Partner, member of Board of Directors, Management and Marketing committees
- Sean Bosack, Pro Bono Committee Chair, member of Marketing Committee

Other Diversity Initiatives Godfrey & Kahn has conducted on-site diversity training and is committed to recruiting and appointing women and minorities when the firm has a vacancy, promotional opportunity, or a need to expand the workforce. Highlights of some of the firm’s other initiatives include:
- The Milwaukee Mosaic Partnerships Program is designed to build social capital within racial and ethnic diversity. Two Godfrey & Kahn shareholders are members of this new initiative that involved 228 people--114 white and 114 individuals of color--in a nine-month journey to build trust, friendship and communication. The long-term goal is to establish a sizable group of community leaders who have bridged some of the racial divide in the area and are comfortable opening their networks to a wider group.

Godfrey & Kahn Employee Cultural Celebrations – The firm hosts all-employee events commemorating a holiday or cultural event important to a minority group four times a year. Our Diversity Committee invites guest speakers and offers dining experiences reflective of the celebration. See the latest issue of "Mosaic" for details.
Professional Development Milwaukee, home to our main office, is a richly diverse city that offers minority professionals an environment in which they can succeed. The city’s minority professional community is a close group that welcomes new members and encourages networking with individuals who share similar challenges and goals.
From the moment a new attorney or summer associate arrives at Godfrey & Kahn, we support their professional and personal development through informal one-on-one mentoring and also through a variety of programs. For example, a comprehensive associate-training program focuses on career development issues, including business development and client relations skills. In addition, although Godfrey & Kahn’s career development efforts always will be based primarily on the informal, day-to-day mentoring that experienced attorneys provide to our other attorneys, we also provide more formal mentoring programs to help new associates and summer associates integrate with the firm and the business community. When new associates arrive at Godfrey & Kahn, they are assigned one mentor who is a member of their team and is responsible for assisting them with their development. Associates are also assigned "off-team" mentors, allowing them to confide in an attorney who is a member of a different practice group and who may be able to address their concerns more discreetly and effectively.
