2011 Godfrey & Kahn Summer Associate ProgramFall 2011
There are generally three "rules" of the Godfrey & Kahn summer associate program:
1) Do your best work;
2) Get to know as many Godfrey & Kahn attorneys as possible; and
3) Experience the city.
There is a "work hard, play hard" mentality in being a lawyer and it holds true in the firm's nine-week summer associate program. The program allows summer associates to get a feel for the work lawyers do on a day-to-day basis as well as learn about the different practice areas at the firm. Every scheduled activity has a purpose. For example, each practice group at the firm conducts a "101" lunch to discuss what their team is all about. During these lunches, summer associates are afforded the opportunity to see the team members as a group and learn about that particular area of law as it relates to the type of work they do, their clients and the rest of the firm.
Godfrey & Kahn attorneys present formal training sessions covering topics such as choice of entity, negotiation and depositions to the summer associates. Not only does this provide hands-on experience for the summer associates, it also gives Godfrey & Kahn lawyers a chance to present training sessions that are requested by clients. Summer associates are also given opportunities to attend client meetings, closings, hearings and trials.
In addition to the "work" side of the equation, the program also emphasizes social interactions with Godfrey & Kahn attorneys. Two practice groups team up - typically on a weekly basis - to host a social outing with the summer associates. This allows the attorneys and summer associates to get to know each other on a more informal basis as well as show off the some of the wonderful venues Wisconsin has to offer. These events usually consist of a networking event that gets people mingling, such as ping pong in Milwaukee's Third Ward, lawn bowling at Lake Park, a tour of the Harley Davidson museum or a historic city trolley tour followed by a group dinner.
The ultimate goal is to help the summer associates learn what type of lawyer they want to be and see if Godfrey & Kahn is right for them. At the same time, the program provides the firm insight on the potential the summer associate has to be a successful attorney at the firm. If the three "rules" of the summer associate program are followed, it's a win-win situation for the summer associates, our clients and Godfrey & Kahn.
