G&K Summer Associate Learning ExperiencesAugust 05, 2010
Having grown up outside of Wisconsin, I entered the on-campus interview process with no preconceived notions about law firms in the area and with a desire to find a firm where I could build a long career. I was surprised during the interview process by how congenial the Godfrey & Kahn attorneys were in both their interactions
with me and each other. The attorneys I met described Godfrey & Kahn as a place
where young attorneys are given complex tasks and where questions are always
During the summer, my expectations were greatly surpassed. I was given the opportunity to prepare a client update for the Securities team, perform due diligence for a client merger, draft a memo regarding liability for the Litigation team, and research banking regulations in Florida for the Banking and Financial Institutions team. Throughout my assignments, I always felt able to walk into the assigning attorney's office and ask a question. I really feel as though I was given every
opportunity to succeed.
Outside of work, there was always time to have fun and get to know the attorneys in a less formal atmosphere. We participated in a cooking challenge, attended a Brewers game, went fishing on Lake Michigan, and spent the day with Chief Justice Abrahamson of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. I truly enjoyed my time at Godfrey & Kahn and feel very grateful for the opportunity to learn from such amazing people this past summer.
For the average law student, participating in on-campus interviews and trying to find the right type of summer employment can be a challenging and stressful task, particularly in a struggling economic market. After interviewing with two attorneys from Godfrey & Kahn my 1L year, I knew the firm would be the perfect fit for me. I was drawn in by the sincerity that my interviewers exuded, as well as the distinct culture that I sensed within the firm.
Spending my summer at Godfrey & Kahn was a remarkably fulfilling experiencet hat surpassed any expectations I may have had. Having returned to the firm after completing my second year, I can honestly say that my 2L summer experience has been just as fulfilling. Over the past two summers, I have worked directly with some of Milwaukee's most talented attorneys in various areas of the law, including Real Estate, Securities, Corporate, and Estate Planning. What I have enjoyed most about the assignments is that they are typical of what would be assigned to first-year associates. This has not only given me a sense of accountability that I rarely experience, but has also allowed me to see how my work affects real clients with real needs.
One of the most appealing characteristics of the summer program at Godfrey & Kahn is that it has both professional and social aspects. When I am not working on an assignment or sitting in on a conference call, I might be having lunch with the Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, volunteering at the Hunger Task Force, bowling, or taking a tour of the Harley Davidson Museum. The firm does a great job of diversifying its summer program, providing summer associates with the tools needed to become well-rounded, successful attorneys. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a part of the program and I have truly enjoyed being a summer associate at Godfrey & Kahn!
