Michael Skindrud is of counsel to the firm, based in the Madison office. His practice has focused on health care clients, including hospitals and health systems, physicians, health insurers, health technology companies, and investors in the health and technology sectors. He has also represented numerous technology start-up companies spun off from University of Wisconsin-Madison research programs.

His work included mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and provider and information networks. He advised clients on debt and equity financings, tax structuring, corporate governance, technology licensing and transfer, and on health regulatory compliance matters under the Stark and Anti-Kickback Laws, the False Claims Act, the Civil Monetary Penalty Law, and on Medicare payment matters.

Michael chaired the firm’s Health Care Practice Group for 10 years, leading a working group of attorneys drawn from the firm’s key business and litigation practice groups and integrated across all five of the firm’s offices. As adjunct faculty of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Michael taught a survey course on health law, policy and administration during the spring semester of 2013.

Michael’s leadership experience includes service on the firm’s Management Committee, Board of Directors, and Marketing Committee. He was managing partner for more than 10 years of LaFollette & Sinykin, a 30 lawyer Madison firm, before it became part of Godfrey & Kahn in the year 2000. Michael has also served numerous civic and arts organizations as a director and officer

Represented ThedaCare (Hospital System based in Appleton, WI) in its acquisition of the Shawano Medical Center (a hospital located in Shawano, WI), 2011

Represented ThedaCare in its acquisition of Appleton Cardiology Associates and employment of its 16 cardiologists, 2010

Represented ConjuGon (a Madison, WI medical technology company) in its formation, operation, and multiple a private equity financings, 2001 - 2010

Represented BioSystem Development (a Madison, WI technology company) in a private equity financing, 2010

Represented Nemean Networks (a Madison, WI information technology security company) in its formation, operation, and sale of assets to Qualys (a CA company), 2007 - 2010

Represented Aurora Spectral Technologies (a Milwaukee medical technology company) in its formation, technology licensing, and private equity financing, 2010

Represented Capitol Indemnity Corp. (a Madison WI insurer) in its acquisition of MMP's (Kansas City, MO) specialty global insurance division and employment of its key personnel, 2009

Represented ThedaCare in the creation of a joint venture with physicians for the ownership and operation of an ambulatory outpatient center, 2008 - present

Represented TomoTherapy (a Madison, WI medical device company) in its formation, operation, and numerous equity financings from startup to IPO, 1997 - 2007 (since acquired by Accuray, a CA company)

Represented Meriter Health Services (Hospital system in Madison, WI) in its sale of Meriter Retirement Services to Pacific Retirement Services (Medford OR), 2007

Represented ThedaCare in its acquisition of Riverside Medical Center (located in Waupaca, WI), 2006

Represented Wisconsin Health Information Organization, a consortium of payers, providers, and the State of WI, in its formation, funding, operation, and creation of the WHIO Health Analytics Exchange, a source of health claims information covering more than 200 million claims for care provided to 3.7 million Wisconsin residents, for use by payers, providers, and consumers to improve the quality and efficiency of health care, 2005 - present

Represented Touchpoint Insurance Company and its shareholders (Appleton and Green Bay, WI) in the sale of its assets to UnitedHealthcare (a MN insurer) and negotiation of provider agreements with shareholders, 2004

Represented the Wisconsin Collaborative for Health Care Quality, a consortium of providers, payers, and the Wisconsin Medical Society, in its formation and operation, to improve health care in Wisconsin by developing, gathering data on, and making publically available health care performance measurement information, 2003 - present

Represented Meriter Health Services in its acquisition of a controlling interest in Physicians Plus Insurance Corp (Madison, WI), 2000
