For families going through difficulties, Karryn Dawood’s compassionate approach to estate planning makes grieving a little easier.

Dawood joined Godfrey & Kahn in 1992 as a paralegal for the firm’s estate-planning practice group. She helps lawyers and clients with asset transfers, probate and trust administration and tax returns.

Estate planning can be complicated for the firm’s clients, especially after a death occurs. Dawood said compassion is essential when she’s working with these matters.

“Behind the legal and financial maze of court documents, asset transfers and tax returns that comprise estate and trust administration, there are people who have lost a loved one,” Dawood said.

Firm shareholder Gardner Govan said it’s as if Dawood has a “magical elixir” that both comforts people and helps keep the legal process moving efficiently.

“Karryn understands that it’s not all about business and is able to strike the perfect balance of listening, expressing empathy and completing the task at hand,” said David Patzer, shareholder and chairman of Godfrey & Kahn’s estate-planning group.

Patzer said other paralegals and attorneys at the firm go to her for advice on how to handle certain situations. They trust her advice and value her ability to think with the big picture in mind.

“We trust Karryn with our firm’s oldest, largest and most complex estate-planning clients,” Patzer said. “Karryn is critical to our team’s success.”

Dawood think it’s a privilege to be part of a team helping people through difficult times.

“The times that I’ve personally made a difference and helped people are the most memorable and meaningful to me,” Dawood said.

In the past 28 years, she said the excellence of her colleagues has inspired her and kept her committed to providing the best service possible.

“I feel like I am just hitting my stride and the best is yet to come,” Dawood said.
