The Energy Strategies Practice Group provides strategic input on energy cost-saving and sustainability opportunities. We have a broad knowledge of the variety of grants and tax and other incentives for energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy projects, allowing our clients to significantly reduce their implementation costs.
Godfrey & Kahn has counseled large energy users who are interested in reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint with regard to the tax, grant and rebate incentives available for the implementation of energy efficiency measures. Godfrey & Kahn has used its experience in climate change and sustainable development matters to advise clients in carbon footprint analysis and strategies to significantly reduce energy costs in their operations and maximize environmental, marketing and other benefits.
Our firm hosted the Clean Power Plan Forum for Wisconsin stakeholders. The forum included state, federal and industry officials to discuss opportunities and challenges created by EPA’s Clean Power Plan and associated litigation over the Plan. The Forum was attended by more than 90 participants in the energy sector.
We also are members of and serve as chairman of the Public Policy Committee for the Mid-West Energy Research Consortium (M-WERC). M-WERC represents one of the largest clusters of energy, power, battery and control companies and education and research institutions. Located in the Midwest, it is a catalyst for the growth of these companies through innovative, advanced research on workforce development. Our active role in M-WERC creates valuable contacts and experience in the clean tech market sector.
Carbon Footprint Assessment
Godfrey & Kahn represented a federally recognized tribe in a confidential matter to provide an assessment of the tribe’s energy and carbon footprint, generated by human activities at all of its facilities and mobile sources, and then make recommendations for reducing their footprint through a combination of conservation, capital improvements and renewable energy strategies.
Energy Efficiency and Air Quality Project
Godfrey & Kahn represented an Indian tribe in a project involving the energy efficient rehabilitation of 96 homes and addressing significant indoor air quality issues. Electrical energy represents a very significant and recurring cost for tribal residents of a very high energy cost state. The project is expected to collectively save residents approximately $34,016 annually. The successful strategy includes obtaining a$600,000 Indian Community Development Block Grant (FY 2016) and structuring the project to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional state energy efficiency incentives.
Energy Efficient Lighting Installation
Godfrey & Kahn represented an Indian tribe in the installation of a large scale energy efficient lighting project at a Tribe’s casino/hotel parking structure. The successful strategy included obtaining a $500,000 competitive DOE grant and combining it with significant state funding to fund the vast majority of the project.

Godfrey & Kahn represents Franklin Energy Services, LLC, a Port Washington, Wisconsin based company that focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy programs for utilities and states, in all of its business, real estate, regulatory and contract matters.
Wisconsin Climate Change Action Initiative, Inc. (WCCAI)
Godfrey & Kahn formed the non-profit corporation WCCAI to promote behavior change to reduce the carbon footprint of individuals and entities in Wisconsin.
