The Energy Strategies Practice Group provides strategic input on energy cost-saving and sustainability opportunities. Godfrey & Kahn has counseled large energy users who are interested in reducing their energy consumption and/or carbon footprint in taking advantage of tax, grant and other incentives. We utilize our extensive utility law expertise to work with clients to negotiate for tariff rate structures that allow our clients to lower their energy costs. We have used our experience in climate change and sustainable development matters to advise clients in carbon footprint analysis and strategies to both significantly reduce energy costs and to maximize environmental and marketing benefits.

We are members of and serve as chairman of the Public Policy Committee for the Mid-West Energy Research Consortium (M-WERC). M-WERC represents one of the largest clusters of energy, power, battery and control companies and education and research institutions. Located in the Midwest, it is a catalyst for the growth of these companies through innovative, advanced research on workforce development. Our active role in M-WERC creates valuable contacts and experience in the clean tech market sector.

The project is expected to collectively save residents approximately $34,016 annually. The successful strategy includes obtaining a$600,000 Indian Community Development Block Grant (FY 2016) and structuring the project to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional state energy efficiency incentives.

Energy Efficient Lighting Installation
Godfrey & Kahn represented an Indian tribe in the installation of a large scale energy efficient lighting project at a Tribe’s casino/hotel parking structure. The successful strategy included obtaining a $500,000 competitive DOE grant and combining it with significant state funding to fund the vast majority of the project.
