Computer Use Policies - A Checklist

Fall 1996

Limit downloading of information. Require that any information downloaded be limited for internal use only.

Educate employees concerning uploading of information. This includes a general understanding of copyright and trade laws that may apply to exports. (The Internet is a global system).

No privacy. Develop a policy to minimize an employee's expectation of privacy in computer communications. Advise employees of the policy for intercepting and/or reviewing electronic mail messages by others and the express business purpose for such practice.

Prohibit misuse. Have a general rule providing that the use of the computer system is for business purposes only.

Prohibit unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. Encourage employees to immediately report such incidents to officials.

Prohibit employees from sending/collection of slanderous, abusive, or other electronic images or messages of an offensive nature.

Require employees to sign an acknowledgement of the policy as a condition to access.
