Employees Volunteer for Earth Day at Urban Ecology Center

May 14, 2013

Monday, April 22 marked the fourth year a major project was completed for the Urban Ecology Center (UEC) by Godfrey & Kahn volunteers. The UEC, a neighborhood-based, environmental education, nonprofit community center had a goal to secure a donation and have volunteers plant more than 900 woody shrubs along the Milwaukee River shore. These shrubs will help with shore stabilization, water quality, habitat and diversity. The muddy area the group was working in had been flooded just days before the event.

This section is now part of the Arboretum project, with the goal of adding more biodiversity within this corridor to serve as more valuable habitat for native animals, insects and birds. The UEC began the Arboretum project in 2010 with Godfrey & Kahn planting trees on the west end of the building. In 2011, the group revitalized Riverside Park adjacent to the UEC. In 2012, under downpour conditions, volunteers planted 180 trees and shrubs including species native to southeast Wisconsin along the Oak Leaf Trail.

Health spas have mud treatments. This was far from that, but ask any one of the volunteers about this experience. The answer will be that creating a healthier environment felt pretty good!

Please wait while we gather your results.
