Environmental Attorneys Honored as Leaders in the Law

Harrington and Clancy recognized by legal community for Crandon Mine efforts
March 30, 2004

Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. environmental attorneys Arthur Harrington and John Clancy were honored Tuesday, March 23, at the Wisconsin Law Journal’s Leaders in the Law awards dinner at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

Harrington and Clancy oversaw the legal effort in opposition to the Crandon Mine during the past three and one-half years as well as the recent $16.5 million buy-out of the Crandon Mine property, all on behalf of the Forest County Potawatomi Community. The resolution to a more than 20-year controversy involved coordination of expert testimony before the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the United States Corps of Engineers; collaboration with Martin Schreiber & Associates, Inc. on government relations issues; and partnership with a Washington, D.C. law firm with a significant Native American client base to ensure issues of great cultural importance were properly addressed. Harrington and Clancy’s accomplishment is widely regarded as a victory for the tribe, the state and its visitors.

"Art and John’s tireless leadership and innovative strategies have set the bar for future matters of this nature," said Rick Bliss, managing partner of Godfrey & Kahn. "More importantly, their work has helped protect the Potawatomi’s land and water resources and preserve their cultural, historic and religious significance."

Harrington and Clancy are shareholder members of the Environmental and Energy Law Practice Group in the firm’s Milwaukee office. Harrington is also the group’s team leader.

The Wisconsin Law Journal’s annual Leaders in the Law awards dinner honors individual practitioners and teams based on a variety of achievement criteria surrounding their contributions to the practice of law, the legal community and the community at large.
