Increased Federal Election 2005-2006 Contribution Limits

February 05, 2005

On Thursday, February 3, 2005, the Federal Election Commission approved new contribution limits for the 2005-2006 election cycle. These increased individual contribution limits are made possible through the provision in the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act indexing certain federal contribution limits for inflation. Accordingly, the contribution amount necessary to "max out" to a federal candidate just got a little bigger.

The new federal contribution limits are summarized below.

Type of Contribution
2005-2006 Limit
Old Limit
Individuals to federal candidates (per election - primary and general)$2,100$2,000
Individuals to national party committees (per year)$26,700$25,000
Over cycle limit for individuals (per two year cycle)$101,400$95,000
Total to all federal candidates $40,000$37,500
Total to all other committees $61,400 $57,500

The individual contribution limit to a federal PAC ($5,000 per year) remains unchanged.
