News Briefs: DNR Revises Ground Water Standards

Summer 1995

The Natural Resources Board recently adopted rule revisions modifying groundwater standards applying to environmental investigation and cleanup activities in the state.

The new rule revisions add enforcement standards and preventive action limits for 13 additional substances and modify the standards for 10 substances for which standards already existed. For most of the additions and revisions, the changes correspond to federal drinking water standards. However, the other groundwater standard changes are based on other health-based information provided by the federal government.
In addition to expanding the groundwater standards, the department has expanded analytical testing standards for groundwater. In addition, the rule revisions include language that will allow DNR to grant temporary exemption from standards for recirculation, infiltration or injunction used as part of a remedial response. Other changes were also made in related regulations to clarify definitions and requirements, and to reduce confusion in applying the regulations to the substances that have multiple synonyms.
