Green card applicants required to get COVID-19 vaccine beginning in October

On Oct. 1, 2021, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the U.S. Department of State will require COVID-19 vaccinations for all individuals applying for lawful permanent residence (green cards) with limited exceptions.

All applicants for permanent residence who receive their medical examination on or after Oct. 1, 2021, must complete the COVID-19 vaccine series and provide proof/documentation of their vaccination status to obtain permanent residence. The physician performing the medical exam must inspect and confirm the applicant’s documentation of vaccination.

Exceptions will be given to individuals who are too young to receive the vaccine, have a medical contraindication to the vaccine or who do not have access to one of the approved vaccines in their home country. Individuals may also apply for a waiver based on religious or moral grounds.
