USCIS releases new I-9 form – new version must be used by Jan. 22, 2017

November 28, 2016

sign formUnited States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently released its new revised version of the Form I-9. Employers must use this new version, dated Nov. 14, 2016 by Jan. 22, 2017. Until then, employers may use the old version, dated March 8, 2013.

USCIS believes this version, especially if completed online, will be much more user-friendly. Sections throughout the new online version contain clickable question mark icons that provide information about what is required in that section. The new form includes drop-down lists in certain areas, calendars for entering dates, and easier access to the instructions while you are in the form.

The new version, whether completed online or not, also includes a dedicated area for additional information which will avoid the use of the margins to add additional data. It also includes prompts to ensure information is entered correctly, and the ability to enter multiple preparers and translators for Section 1.

As with any new I-9 version, please make sure you review the form and instructions carefully before and during completion. Please also note that USCIS has not yet updated the M-274 (Employer Handbook), though USCIS expects to do that in the near future.

Information on the new version can be found here.
