Sarah Sargent is a shareholder in the firm’s Data Privacy, Cybersecurity & Technology practice, where she advises companies on managing data risk and operationalizing privacy and security compliance in complex, fast-moving environments. She holds the CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM and Privacy Law Specialist certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals. She is known for providing pragmatic, easily accessible advice that enables legal and compliance teams to move quickly while managing risk.
Sarah partners with companies to build and implement practical, scalable privacy programs that align with business goals. She counsels clients on compliance with U.S. and international privacy laws, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), CIPA and various other state and industry-specific privacy laws, and helps organizations translate evolving regulatory requirements into actionable policies, processes and governance structures.
Sarah’s practice also includes advising on cybersecurity preparedness and incident response. She regularly guides clients through data breaches and ransomware incidents, coordinating with forensics experts, insurers and regulators to contain risk and minimize disruption. She works with organizations across a variety of industries—including healthcare, financial services, insurance, manufacturing, retail and nonprofit—to respond efficiently and meet legal and business obligations.
In addition, Sarah serves as outside counsel on technology transactions and related risk management, including software licensing, SaaS, IT-related agreements, vendor management and IoT product launches. She has particular experience representing technology companies operating in regulated industries, including healthcare and financial services. She also supports privacy and cybersecurity due diligence in mergers and acquisitions.
Before joining Godfrey & Kahn, Sarah practiced at a large Milwaukee-based law firm, where she focused on privacy compliance and data security incident response, including ransomware matters. She also has experience in commercial litigation in state and federal courts.
Sarah is actively engaged in her community and supports many organizations, including Centro Legal as a Board Member, the Milwaukee Bar Association as a Director and the Association of Women Lawyers.
